Art & Design

Art, craft and design represent some of the highest forms of human creativity.

At Gilbert Colvin Primary School, we teach a high-quality art and design education which engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping  them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

We strive to take every opportunity to further children’s understanding of how art and design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to  the culture and creativity of our nation as well as develop learn about other cultures.

We aim to help children master their skills in art and design through teaching pupils how to evaluate and analyse their final product using the language of art and design. Throughout the school, we learn about great artists, craft makers and designers.

In Key Stage 1, pupils are encouraged to use a range of materials such as poster paint, watercolours, oil pastel and pencil and techniques such as shape, size, pattern and texture to produce creative work which shares their ideas, records their experiences and further their imagination.

In Key Stage 2, Pupils are taught to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculptures by experimentation and use of materials such as pencil, charcoal, paint and clay.
