Local & Global Communities

At Gilbert Colvin primary school the community we live in is very important to us and we look for opportunities to maintain and build our links with the local as well as global community.

We have links with our local places of worship and different year groups have visited these places of worship to learn about their importance and how people worship there.  Members of the local community are welcomed as volunteers in the school to support with learning such as talking to children about their experiences, religions or sharing skills with the children. We endeavour to utilise our local area by planning trips to the local high street as part of learning about our local environment as well as visiting Claybury woods to find out about local habitats. We liaise with local schools, where our children visit the local secondary school for author visits. We also benefit from students coming in to school to support in learning through reading buddies, learning Spanish and getting support with Maths and Science.

Establishing links with global communities is also an integral part of our school. This has included fundraising for charities linked to the Syria appeal as well as countries which have been inflicted with natural disasters. Specific year groups have participated in e-conferences with children in Canadian schools and have exchanged cards and letters at Christmas with Spanish schools.

We are developing further our global links by looking to establish more links with schools in Spain and/ or South America as Spanish is the school language. We hope these links will provide opportunities for our children to learn about different cultures and compare their own lives and education to those of children in other countries.
